Jasmine Tang Thanks to a generation of informed consumers demanding change, corporations have been feeling the pressure to strengthen their responses to the threat of climate change. New Balance has been able to promote sustainability by not only incorporating eco-friendly materials in their footwear (as demonstrated by Jaden Smith’s Vision Racer) but also teaming up with organizations that champion environmental solutions. The Fresh Foam Hierro v6, which debuted last month, embraces both actions by using recycled content for its construction and donating a portion of sales to the global movement 1% for the Planet. The hiking and trail model keeps the goodwill going as it releases a new colorway consisting of Virtual Sky and Sour Grape.
The women’s exclusive sees a mesh body in a bright blue Virtual Sky, which exhibits chevron-like prints via TPU threading woven throughout. Even the sole unit seems to echo the geometric patterns created by the TPU threads, as the midsole opts for a repeated diamond-esque texture. This light blue midsole is made from New Balance’s Fresh Foam to deliver an ultra-cushioned, lightweight ride. For branded elements, a contrasting purple, namely Sour Grape, is applied to the large “N” logo on the lateral side and the medial side’s “new balance” text. NB promises that throughout 2021, the brand will donate 1% of MSRP from all Fresh Foam Hierro v6 sold in the U.S. to 1% for the Planet—an organization that works with businesses to collect donations for a number of non-profits working towards climate action.
