Mamba Out. Those were the final words uttered by Kobe Bryant as an NBA player, capping off an emotional post-game speech that reflected on his dedication to the game an his relentless pursuit of greatness. After two decades as a Los Angeles Laker and five NBA championships, the Black Mamba put the finishing touch on his illustrious career with an unthinkable 60-point game on April 13th, 2016.
The tragic events of January 26th, 2020 reminded humanity as a whole that life is truly short. Since his passing, Nike — in partnership with the Kobe Bryant estate — established the Kobe Brand, a new sub-category within Nike Basketball committed to continuing the legacy of the Black Mamba through his footwear. These re-issues are called “Protro” opposed to the conventional “Retro”; at the behest of Kobe, Nike updated the older models with modern standards and dubbed it a “Performance Retro”, or Protro for short.
On its anniversary, Nike is celebrating Kobe’s last game by dropping three different Nike Kobe shoes — the Kobe 4 “Philly”, Kobe 6 “Italian Camo”, and Kobe 6 “Venice Beach”. As a group, they tell the story of Kobe’s life growing up outside of Philadelphia and later in Italy before settling down in the Los Angeles area for over two decades.
All three pairs will be available on SNKRS and at select Nike Basketball retailers for $190 each. Given the demand for the shoes, all releases will likely be through a Draw/Raffle system; see the store lists for each of the releases ahead.
