In continuing our exclusive breaking updates of the 30th Anniversary Air Griffey Max 1 Retro in 2026, Sneaker News confirms the return of the original “Freshwater” colorway next Summer.
Originally dropping in 1996, the Air Griffey Max 1 signature model captivated audiences with its bold design that aligned with Nike’s exploratory design shift in the middle of the decade. Featuring full-length Air with visible units at the fore-foot and heel, these Griffeys also boasted an avant-garde placement of the Swoosh logo at the toe that truly open doors to the next era of athlete footwear from Beaverton.
As the power-hitting lefty continued his rise as the most popular athlete in professional baseball, so did the demand for his shoes. The Griffey line didn’t last entirely that long, but the re-issue of the Air Griffey Max in 2009 proved its staying power in the sneaker game. The “Freshwater” is inarguably the most popular colorway of the model, and each of its Retro introductions were met with instant sell-outs.
The 2026 re-issue will carry the same product SKU as the 2021 edition (pictured below), with the same MSRP of $170 expected.
