From its dawn as a record shop to the sneaker hub it is today, Detroit’s Puffer Reds has always been about bringing people together. In celebration of the store’s 45th anniversary and journey through the adidas Business Track – a career-building program launched in partnership with Detroit’s own Pensole Lewis College – Puffer Reds and adidas have co-created an Adistar Cushion 3 that bridges the retailer’s music roots with their current position in streetwear.
Puffer Reds was founded in 1979 and is therefore celebrating its 46th anniversary this year, but let’s not get caught up on the technicality. Dubbed “Track 45,” the Puffer Reds x adidas Adistar Cushion 3 features a red and grey upper inspired by the shop’s Wall of Fame. TPU overlays featuring vinyl finishes nod to the store’s music roots, while vintage audio motifs appear on the lining. Puffer Reds’ founding year appears on both sides, the 313 and 734 area codes appear on the heels, and while not shown in this image set, “Detroit” appears in Lions blue on the outsole.
“This collaboration honors our history and evolution while spotlighting the community that continues to inspire us,” says James Berry of Puffer Reds. “We are all about community at Puffer Reds, and are proud to have had adidas’ support from the start of our journey through now.”
The Puffer Reds x adidas Adistar Cushion 3 “Track 45” retails for $150 and drops August 28th through both Puffer Reds stores (Ypsilanti and Wayne) and pufferreds.com. All pairs purchased on that day will also include a ticket to a launch celebration happening at Diamondback Music Hall that same evening. See official images below if you’re looking to cop.
