Pharrell Williams’ adidas Jellyfish has been one of the buzziest sneakers in silhouette since fans first got a glimpse of it at Paris Fashion Week towards the top of the year. In an industry where slim sneakers are the current object of fascination, leave it to the Grammy winner to reverse that movement entirely. The adidas Jellyfish is about as chunky as chunky gets, exaggerating the composition and proportions of an already-existing adidas tech runner, the adiStar Cushion. Three Stripes designers shared that the Jellyfish title is a literal one, with the bulbous extensions outside of the profile meant to evoke the invertebrate’s own biology.
Much like artistic affiliates The Clipse benefitted from an expertly crafted rollout, part of what’s made the Jellyfish so coveted has been its enigmatic marketing, only shown on choice occasions in the first 60% of the year. Given that, much of the energy has been centered on this debut orange colorway, but additional variations have trickled out: a white/grey, white/blue, and black/black are expected to follow this pair up. [Ironically, one of those pairs was debuted by Malice and Pusha T themselves.]
